BODY STRUCTURE
The automotive industry's drive to create a more
refined, quieter vehicle has become as important to
OEMs as performance and styling. Powertrain vibration
and road noise resonate through vehicles creating unpleasant
sounds that eventually enter the passenger compartment.
MSC has developed a series of unique material solutions
for use in Body-In-White applications that directly
damp vibration before it has an opportunity to penetrate
the interior of the vehicle.
Extensive acoustical testing reveals that a substantial
reduction in passenger compartment ambient noise can
be achieved by using Quiet Steel® in a dash panel.
Quiet Steel® offers significant NVH benefits thereby
allowing BIW structures engineers to remove traditional
add-on treatments that can complicate assembly and cause
paint contamination. By designing Quiet Steel® into
the body structure itself, engineers achieve 100% damping
coverage over a panel and eliminate costly alternative
patches in the process. Today, MSC's Quiet Steel®
is used on select dash panels at Ford Motor Company
and General Motors.
In addition to improved acoustical performance, Quiet
Steel® also offers potential weight reduction opportunities
and associated cost savings. Quiet Steel® forms,
welds and is 100% recyclable like standard steel. Quiet
Steel® will soon find its home in other Body-In-White
applications like wheelhouses, upper dash cowls, floor
panels, back panels, package trays, and spare tire tubs.
MSC's goal is to provide exceptional noise reduction
while simultaneously reducing vehicle weight and costs
for its OEM customers.
CHASSIS/COMPONENTS
MSC is delivering innovative solutions to stamped
subsystem components such as power systems, electromechanical
systems, and latching mechanisms to OEMs and Tier 1s.
The objective is to isolate noise and vibration, reduce
costs, and streamline processes. Quiet Steel® can
be used in a variety of components to eliminate covers,
minimize greases, and improve performance. MSC has the
expertise to take an application from concept to production
and is equipped to support the development of the solution
through every phase in between. Quiet Steel® is
proven effective at reducing Noise and Vibration in
the following components, among others:
Power seat tracks
Window lift mechanisms
Power door systems
Fan and blower housings
POWERTRAIN
MSC's Quiet Steel® materials continue to be
the material of choice for OEM engineers to reduce noise
related to powertrain applications. MSC offers a variety
of viscoelastic core materials that are designed to
meet the specific NVH issue of each application. Quiet
Steel® is currently used to reduce engine noise
through:
Oil pans
Valve covers
Front covers
Engine covers
Baffles
MSC continues to develop new Quiet Steel® materials
to address other specific engine issues. MSC, however,
is more than a material provider. We leverage our NVH,
engineering and testing expertise to identify and provide
solutions to address complex powertrain NVH issues.

BRAKE MATERIALS
MSC has been the leader in Brake NVH Insulators
for OE and Aftermarket applications since the early
1980s. In conjunction with General Motors, MSC first
developed constrained layer insulators to solve brake
noise occurrences on GM passenger car applications.
Today, MSC offers a full product line of Brake Insulators
designed to solve almost every Brake Noise issue. MSC's
NVH solutions include constrained layer, multiple constrained
layer and single layer constructions utilizing technologies
such as silicones, thermosets, acrylics and even fluorocarbons.
MSC's materials are also used to solve Brake NVH issues
beyond North America. MSC manufactures and stamps brake
insulators in North America, Europe, South America,
and Southest Asia. MSC's sales, marketing and technical
resources are available to provide a solution for your
brake NVH problems. Contact us today and let us show
you our approach to improving brake-related NVH performance.
AUTO TRIM
MSC leads the coil coating industry in exterior
automotive trim with our proprietary product, Dura Trim®.
MSC, in conjunction with our development partner PPG
Industries, developed this application specifically
for the automotive market. Based on PPG's fluoropolymer
resin, Dura Trim® comes in black and other
dark colors including metallics. In addition, Dura Trim®
is available in a variety of gloss levels ranging from
10% to 80%. For more information on our pre-painted
metal and corrosion resistance solutions, please click
